What you will need

  • The Laser Digital Calendar and included power adaptor
  • A 2.4 GHz home Wi-Fi network and password
  • An Android phone or iPhone
  • The Whale Framely app
  • An email address if creating the recommended email-based account
Important: This digital calendar supports 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only. It does not support 5 GHz Wi-Fi.

Step 1: Connect and turn on the calendar

  1. Place the calendar on its table stand on a flat, stable surface, or install it using a suitable wall-mounting arrangement.
  2. Connect the included power adaptor to the USB-C power port.
  3. Connect the adaptor to a wall outlet.
  4. Press the Power button. The Whale Framely logo will appear.

Use only the included DC 5 V/3 A power adaptor. The USB-C port is for power input only.

Step 2: Complete the initial on-screen setup

  1. Select your preferred language and continue.
  2. Select your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network.
  3. Enter the Wi-Fi password and tap Connect.
  4. Check the date, time and time zone. Adjust them if required.
  5. Select Set up as new device.
  6. If a software update is available, select Update and wait for it to finish.

If you are replacing another Whale Framely calendar, you can select Copy data from another device instead of setting it up as a new device.

Step 3: Download the Whale Framely app

  1. On an Android phone, open the Google Play Store and search for Whale Framely.
  2. On an iPhone, open the App Store and search for Whale Framely.
  3. Install and open the app.

Step 4: Create or access your account

The Whale Framely app provides the following account options:

  • Email account - recommended: Your information is stored in the cloud and can be restored if you change phones or reinstall the app.
  • Google, Facebook or Apple ID: Sign in using a supported existing account.
  • Guest account: No sign-up is required, but the data is not backed up and calendar syncing is unavailable. This option is not recommended for regular use.

Step 5: Pair your phone with the calendar

  1. Make sure your phone is connected to the internet.
  2. Open the Whale Framely app and sign in.
  3. Wait for the calendar to display its QR code and pairing code.
  4. In the Whale Framely app, open the Devices tab.
  5. Scan the QR code displayed on the calendar or manually enter the pairing code.
  6. Confirm that your calendar appears in the Devices tab.
The QR code and pairing code are valid for 48 hours. If the code expires, open Settings > Members > Invite new members on the calendar to generate a new code.

How to invite another family member

For a family member who has their own phone:

  1. On the calendar, open Settings > Members > Invite new members.
  2. Share the displayed QR code or pairing code with the family member.
  3. Ask them to install and open the Whale Framely app.
  4. In the app, they should open Devices > Add Device.
  5. They can then scan the QR code or enter the pairing code.

To create a member profile for a child or someone without a phone:

  1. On the calendar, open Settings > Members > Add member.
  2. Select a profile photo, enter the member’s name and choose a colour.
  3. Tap Add.

How to connect an existing calendar

Google Calendar, Outlook, Hotmail, Live and iCloud calendars are connected through the Whale Framely app on your phone. They are not connected directly from the calendar screen.

In the Whale Framely app, open User > Sync Calendar, select the calendar service and follow the sign-in instructions.

Google Calendar and Outlook, Hotmail or Live support selectable one-way or two-way syncing. Visitor accounts cannot use calendar syncing.

Troubleshooting setup problems

The calendar cannot connect to Wi-Fi

  • Confirm that you are connecting to a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network.
  • Re-enter the Wi-Fi password.
  • Check that the Wi-Fi router and internet connection are working.
  • Open Settings > Wi-Fi on the calendar and try connecting again.

The calendar does not appear in the app

  • Confirm that the phone is connected to the internet.
  • Make sure the Whale Framely app is open and you are signed in.
  • Try scanning the QR code again or manually enter the pairing code.
  • If the pairing code is more than 48 hours old, generate a new code from Settings > Members > Invite new members.

Existing calendar events are not appearing

  • Confirm that your phone has an internet connection.
  • Open the Whale Framely app and check that the correct calendar has been connected.
  • Check that the event is saved and assigned to this device.
  • Pull down on the calendar view to refresh it.
  • If authorisation has expired, remove and reconnect the third-party calendar through User > Sync Calendar.

The touch screen is not responding

  • Clean the screen gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth.
